The Apple Tree is a non-profit venture into giving back to our community, hosted by Abundant Life Korean Church (생명찬 교회) since 2007. It is run completely off donations. In the past, there has been a fee per student, but there are now what we like to call "mandatory donations." How this works: There are a few levels ranging from $10 with a fee waiver to ~$200 per student. Which one you choose depends on the individual family's income level and how many students are enrolling from that family. It's a "give if you can, receive if you can't" ideology, in which the entire community is involved in an organic system of give and take.
For the program, we take in children going into grades 1-8 for a very active 6 week summer program. Throughout these 6 weeks, children are tutored in math, reading comprehension, and writing at the level they will be entering the next academic year during the morning hours. After lunch, we switch gears to what we like to call "Afternoon Activities," which include basic to intermediate instruction in musical instruments, art, and other special activities! Every Friday is reserved for field trips and other special events (e.g. California Science Center, ice skating, water slides, the beach)!
Though this may seem like any other summer after-school program, our main purpose lies in an area completely separate from academics or extracurricular activities. Our mission is to show and teach these children the ultimate virtue of love through our example. Some of these children experience this love at home everyday, while others struggle to find any at all. The Apple Tree exists solely for loving these children unconditionally. At the same time, we create a safe environment for children to have fun while not squandering their summer, home alone while parents are at work.
